E-Bikes Explained: Classes, Motors, Real-World Range, and the Honest Case
E-bikes are the fastest-growing segment in cycling because they solve the exact problems that stop people from riding: hills, distance, sweat, cargo, and fitness gaps between riding partners. Here is the buyer's-level understanding in five minutes.
The three classes (U.S. system)
- Class 1: pedal-assist only, motor cuts off at 20 mph. Allowed nearly everywhere bikes are, including most trails and paths. The default choice.
- Class 2: adds a throttle (power without pedaling), still capped at 20 mph. Useful for stop-and-go and riders with joint issues; banned on some trails.
- Class 3: pedal-assist to 28 mph. The commuter-favorite class — meaningfully faster door to door — but restricted from many multi-use paths and often helmet-mandated. Rules vary by state and country (much of Europe caps assist at 25 km/h), so check locally.
Motors and batteries
Hub motors (in the wheel) are cheaper and fine for flat commutes. Mid-drive motors (at the cranks, from brands like Bosch and Shimano) drive through the bike's gears, climb far better, balance the bike's weight centrally, and dominate the quality market. Power is capped at 750 W in the U.S. (250 W nominal in the EU); torque (50–85+ Nm) is the number that predicts hill-climbing feel. Batteries run 400–750 Wh typically; expect meaningful capacity fade after 500–1,000 full charge cycles — years of normal use — and note quality-brand batteries with certified electronics (look for UL 2849) are where fire risk is managed.
Real-world range
Advertised range assumes low assist, flat ground, and a light rider. The honest math: e-bikes consume roughly 10–20 Wh per mile depending on assist level, speed, hills, and cargo. A 500 Wh battery therefore delivers roughly 25–50 real miles — plan on the low end for high assist and hills. Range anxiety has a cheap cure: a second charger at work.
Is it still exercise?
Yes, and the research is consistent: e-bike riders work at moderate intensity (pedal-assist still requires pedaling) and — the decisive part — ride more often and farther than they did on regular bikes, so total physical activity typically rises. For riders with knee issues, long commutes, hilly cities, or cargo-and-kids duty, an e-bike is not cheating; it is the difference between riding and driving.
