About CalculateBike
CalculateBike exists to help cyclists answer a simple question: how fast was I going, how far did I go, and what did it cost me in energy? We publish a free cycling calculator and 26+ peer-reviewed evidence-based articles on cycling speed, training, fitness outcomes, and bike maintenance. Everything here is grounded in exercise science and real-world riding practice.
Our Mission
Cycling is a sport where data drives improvement. Unlike casual riders, serious cyclists track power, heart rate, pace, and distance. We believe every cyclist — casual or competitive — benefits from understanding their numbers. CalculateBike makes that data accessible and the science behind it transparent.
Our Calculator: How It Works
Speed-Time-Distance Triangle
Our core calculator solves the classic speed-time-distance relationship: enter any two values and it returns the third. It's the fundamental tool for ride planning and performance tracking.
MET-Based Calorie Estimation
Our calorie estimates use metabolic equivalent (MET) values from the Compendium of Physical Activities, the gold-standard reference used in exercise science and epidemiology. METs account for cycling speed, body weight, and duration to give you a science-grounded estimate of energy expenditure.
Every formula used in the calculator is disclosed on this site. The tool runs entirely in your browser — distances, times, and weights you enter are never transmitted to our servers or stored.
Our Editorial Standards
CalculateBike's 26+ articles are fact-checked against:
- Published research: Studies from journals including Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, Journal of Sports Sciences, Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports, and cycling-specific technical literature on aerodynamics, biomechanics, and performance.
- Published training methodology: Established frameworks like Training Stress Balance, power-based training zones, and periodization principles used by competitive cyclists and coaches.
- Field practice: Real-world experience and testing from cyclists of all levels, mechanics, and bike technicians.
Where evidence is mixed or evolving, we say so. Nothing on this site is medical advice — see our disclaimers on every page. We encourage you to talk to your doctor before starting any new exercise program, and consult a qualified bike mechanic for maintenance beyond the basics.
Affiliate & Sponsorship Transparency
CalculateBike is supported by:
